Too much refrigerant will cause liquid slugging and compressor failure. Learn the correct refrigerant charging knowledge for HVAC maintenance.
Many HVAC technicians have a misunderstanding: adding more refrigerant can make cooling stronger. In fact, overcharging refrigerant brings much bigger risks than insufficient refrigerant.
Lack of refrigerant only leads to poor cooling performance. However, excessive refrigerant will cause high pressure overload, rising condensing temperature and liquid slugging inside the compressor. Liquid slugging may bend connecting rods or break valve plates, resulting in permanent compressor scrap.
The correct charging method is to charge refrigerant by weight according to the nameplate of equipment, and check superheat & subcooling data during commissioning. Never judge refrigerant amount only by low pressure gauge.
